Date of Establishment of the Centre: June 2018

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science was founded in June 2018, with the objective of undertaking foundational research in the areas of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) applicable in the Indian context and training the next generation of data and AI scientists. The multi-disciplinary research centre, which is the first of its kind in this region, combines Punjabi Universitys expertise in AI and machine learning with language technology. The university has already been carrying out national and international research collaborations in this area and developed many artificial intelligence based language translation and transliteration software for Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Sindhi. The long-term vision of the centre is to become a leader in data science research, where long-standing fundamental research problems, cutting across disciplines, are targeted and solved.

Besides research in AI and data science, it is proposed to start short term and long courses in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at masters and undergraduate levels. The two year M.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science which has been started in the centre, is equivalent to M.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering for job prospects and will cater to students who aspire to master the demands of integrating the synergistic disciplines of computer science and statistics. The three year BSc course will be offered at regional centre of the University under the mentorship of the centre. These programmes will provide students opportunities to solve real-life problems in different applications domains ranging from science and technology, business and finance, environmental sustainability, Punjabi language technology etc. The programmes will be specifically designed and offered in response to the rapidly developing field of data science and AI that are currently gaining unprecedented traction in the industry as well as in the job market worldwide.
